Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes is the largest and oldest national park in Croatia, which had acquired this status in 1949. Since 1979, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

According to legend, the Plitvice Lakes were created after a great drought. The drought was so unbearable that the locals prayed for the blessing of water for a long period of time. Eventually, the “Black Queen” had appeared in the valley with her magnificent entourage. Her appearance brought with it a long-awaited event – accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms. Rain began to fall relentlessly until the water levels rose so much that they formed regional lakes.

The Plitvice Lakes National Park is located between the mountain ranges of Mala Kapela and Licka Plješivica. This region covers an area of almost 300 km2, and is mostly comprised of beautiful forests and grassy meadows.

The amazing waters which occupy just under 1% of its surface, make part of the Upper and Lower Lakes. These consist of 16 named and several smaller cascading lakes, which merge into the wonderous waterfall Sastavci, which then forms the flow of the Korana River below, a tributary of the Kupa.

Due to its location and historic folklore, on some maps, this region is also known as the ‘Devil’s Garden’.
