Triglav National Park

The eponymous mountain peak of Triglav, sits at 2,864 meters above sea level, a symbol of Slovenia and the highest point of the former Yugoslavia and the Julian Alps.

The origins of this landmark are considered to be mystical in nature, even in today’s world. In Slovenian mythology, it’s believed that the throne of a three-headed deity is located at the top of the mountain. Thus, the name ‘Triglav’ aptly translates to “three heads”.

Triglav is located in the northwestern part of Slovenia. It is one of the oldest national parks in Europe and officially considered a protected landmark since 1924.

The mountain is a merging point for the Soca and Sava rivers. As such, it is also connected with the Danube river and Adriatic sea. Housing the famous Bohinj Lake as well as several other smaller lakes, this picturesque land is definitely one of nature’s greatest marvels.

If you’re feeling adventurous, set out on a climbing expedition to reach the peak. Whether it’s a solo attempt (if you are an experienced mountaineer having appropriate equipment), or a guided climbing tour, the journey from base camp to the top takes about a day to complete. However, to fully experience the Alpine fairytale, a 2-day hike is recommended, with a sleep-over at Kredarica or Planika hut.

Your Triglav adventure isn’t complete until you visit the must-see Goldenhorn chamois. Folklore tells us a thrilling story about this legend but we’ll leave that for you to research on your own.
